The park is situated in a rift valley where the Eurasian & North American tectonic plates meet, making it one of the only places in the world where you can see two continents drifting apart. It is also the site where Iceland's parliament, Althing, was founded in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest functioning parliaments in the world. You will reach to park to after a comfortable drive of 1 hour. Visitors to Thingvellir National Park can explore the park's stunning landscape, which includes a large lake, waterfalls, and volcanic rock formations. The park offers a range of activities for tourists, such as hiking, fishing, & diving in the Silfra fissure, where you can swim between two tectonic plates. Visitors can anticipate the eruption by observing the pre-eruption bubbling & steam rising from the pool. The geyser's explosive display is a thrilling sight to witness and capture on camera. Golden Falls It is a two-tiered waterfall that drops approximately 32 meters into a rugged canyon below. The waterfall is fed by Iceland's second largest glacier, the Langjökull, & its water is a stunning turquoise color due to the suspended sediment in the glacial meltwater. One of the unique features of Gullfoss is that it appears to disappear into the earth as it cascades down the two tiers. This illusion is created by the shape of the canyon & the mist that rises from the waterfall. The sound of the water crashing into the canyon is deafening & the mist that rises from the falls creates a beautiful rainbow on sunny days. It is 10 minute drive from Geysir Geothermal Area there are several things to do and see in the surrounding area. For example, visitors can take a hike along the nearby trails that offer stunning views of the waterfall & the surrounding countryside.
