Founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century BC, Agrigento became one of the leading cities in the Mediterranean world. Its supremacy and pride are demonstrated by the remains of the magnificent Doric temples that dominate the ancient town, much of which still lies intact under today's fields and orchards. The archaeological area of Agrigento, the Valley of the Temples, is on the Southern coast of Sicily and covers the vast territory of the ancient polis, from the Rupe Atenea to the acropolis of the original ancient city, as well as to the sacred hill on which stand the main Doric temples and up to the extramural necropolis. The Valley of the Temples, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, is certainly the most important testimony of the ancient, classical culture of Sicily. It brings together the temples of gods goddesses as well as the area of the necropolis and sanctuaries outside the walls. With your guide you will visit the Temple of Castor and Pollux (Dioscuri), the legendary twin brothers, born from the union of Jupiter and the queen of Sparta, nowadays has only four columns left and has become the symbol of Agrigento, the Temple of Olympian Zeus (Jupiter) built to thank Zeus on the occasion of the Agrigentines’ victory over the Carthaginians, in 480 BC, the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Heracles (Hercules), the Temple of Aesculapius, the Temple of Vulcano and the Tomb of Theron and, of course, the Archeological Museum.
