描述

In 62 A.D. a violent earthquake struck the Vesuvius area. Seventeen years later, on August 24, 79 A.D., the sudden eruption of Vesuvius buried Pompeii and Herculaneum with ashes and lapillus. The buried cities were rediscovered in the 16th Century, but it was only in 1748 that the exploration phase began, under the King of Naples Charles III of Bourbon. Our guide will bring this ancient resort towns to life. After a lovely travel along theTirrenian Coast we will reach Paestum. Here myth and legend coexist. This was an ancient Roman town situated in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, submerged under a torrent of mud and lava after Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. The buildings have been so well preserved that you can walk down the streets pretty much exactly as the Romans would have done over 2000 years ago! Together with your guide, you’ll visit many of the most important sites, public baths with their well-preserved frescoes and mosaics, shops and the gymnasium.

The spectral ruins of ancient Pompeii lead to one of the world's most engrossing archaeological experiences. Much of the site's value lies in the fact that the town wasn't simply blown away by Vesuvius in AD 79 but buried under a layer of lapilli (burning fragments of pumice stone). The result is a remarkably well-preserved slice of ancient life, where visitors can walk down Roman streets and pry around millennial old houses, temples, shops, cafes and amphitheatres. With a private and historian guide, you will be able to visit what is considered to be Europe’s most important archaeological site.

One of Italy’s most majestic sights lies, on the edge of a flat coastal plain, Paestum is a major ancient Greek city on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Magna Graecia. After its foundation by Greek colonists under the name of Poseidonia it was eventually conquered by the Lucanians and later by the Romans. The Lucanians renamed it to Paistos and in turn the Romans gave the city its current name. The ruins of Paestum are notable for their three ancient Greek temples, dating back to the 6th century BC, which are in a very good state of preservation. Paestum is home to three magnificent Doric temples, which are thought to be dedicated to the city's namesake Poseidon (known to the Romans as Neptune), Hera and Ceres. The temples of Neptune and Hera are located next to each other at the Southern end of the site, while the smaller Temple of Ceres is at the Northern end.
