There are some other names for this temple such as Captain’s Garden Hindu Temple, Kapikaawatha Shivan temple. Many believes this is the oldest Hindu temple in Colombo. Its history date back to 17th century. Though the buildings here are not that old it is very impressive to see its classic architecture and sculpture.    Independence Memorial Hall is situated in the Independence Square (formerly Torrington Square) at Colombo 7 in the Cinnamon Gardens, this Hall was built for the commemoration of the independence from British in 1940s. The monument was built at the location where the formal ceremony marking the start of self-rule, with the opening of the first parliament by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester occurred at a special podium February 4, 1948. This Hall is designed on the architecture of the Magul Maduwa. (meeting hall of last king of Sri Lanka) located in Kandy. The column and pillars are decorated with traditional Sri Lankan carvings and paintings. It is being one of the popular venue among travelers in Colombo.
